First tree guard removal event of 2026

On the 8th March we collaborated with the Sutton Bonington Climate Crisis and Biodiversity Action community group in Sutton Bonington, UK to hold this year’s first tree guard removal event.

Throughout 2025 with the help of over 80 volunteers we removed, processed and recycled thousands of degraded tree guards from Diamond Jubilee woodlands. This effort ensures the trees have the room to grow and no plastics are able to leach into the soil, causing harm to local wildlife. Although this was a tremendous effort, we were only able to remove around half of the tree guards in this particular woodland so our aim in the first half of 2026 is to remove and recycle the remaining guards.

Due to the flooding in the area we were only able to remove most of the remaining guards and stack them for processing at our next events in a month’s time but this initial effort will ensure all of the guards are removed from this woodland as soon as possible.
